ILLUSTRATION!!!
*ahem* Anyway, :iconomniscientkiwi: has been asking/bugging/insisting that I do illustrations for my continuing fairy story, Through the Mirrors. So, I had to wait for inspiration to hit me in the head, and finally I got some ideas! So, here is Charlie Cairnstone, Jaden's best friend, and her familiar, Weirdling.
In the story, Charlie is a witch so I figured I would show her practicing some of her magic. I'm not exactly sure what she's trying to do, maybe practicing a light spell so Jaden doesn't trip over everything when he gets up at night.I also tried to show a little bit of what the City of the Sun looks like, but I'm not exactly about to enter architectural school.
As always, there are some things I like about this painting/drawing, and there are some things that drive me crazy. I basically like the inside of Charlie's and Jaden's room-house, but the outside I wish I could do over again with an actual reference. Other then that, I wish I could have kept the color flowing a little more, but my pallet's been getting crowded. I need to do some cleaning...

I'm going to be completely honest with you, and whatever i say is meant to help you improve.

First of all the overall composition is good, the colours work well and are nice and clear (except the colours near her hand). Her proportions are good though her eyes are too high up.

However the way you have painted (not sure what medium you used) this has left marks behind and such. You can stop this happening by using a soft brush which is wide enough for the size paper you are using.

The blue has leaked out of the border which makes it look a bit sloppy, however mistakes happen :). For the clouds it is better to work back on top instead of leaving a gap because it makes it look flat and unfinished, and for this you can add light greys for shadows are darker areas to blend them in better. You can also try a stipling effect using a brush or tissue (depending on the media used also) which can make it look fluffy.

As for the sun's rays they look a bit sloppy too as the colours have blended to make bits of green. What you can do with this is use a watery white mixed with a tiny bit of yellow and stroke away from the sun with your brush to give a more realistic ray look.

What is in the girl's hands is also too muddy and it also looks a bit messy and because of the background, the yellow hasnt worked. To make this work better i'd either use a darker colour or make a thicker more intense colour with the media and work when everything is dry.

To make the whole piece look better you need to work on your highlights and shadows, this will help give your piece a more 3D look.

Annnnd that little mouse is so cute! It is well proportioned, however from this angle you'd only be able to see one ear.

For reference you can browse stock websites and DA has a stock gallery here. You can use it to help make your images look better in realism and for practice :)

have you tried any Gouache? you can make it look just like markers, but without the stripes. XD it's nice to see Charlie in a drawing.

Finally an illustration! My prayers/general naggings have been answered!!! Charlie looks exactly how I pictured her too! I cannot wait to see what Jaden & Mirhae look like! GAH! :XD:

"Now you guys are sure this won't emancipate me from my ridiculous stripèd pants?"
:iconryuredwings:
I would if I could find any at the studio. I love gouache! (Even though it's hard to spell)
It's either acrylic, watercolor or bust since my nose can't stand oil pant. And since I'm in debt past my eyeballs, there isn't going to be any art supplies in my future.
